Rhonda is a mother of 3 kids, 2 sons and 1 daughter. Her oldest is in the Marines, and her two youngest attend school in Gillespie. She is married to Stephen Maykopet.
On April 13, 2017 Rhonda was in a Auto accident on Highway 55 near Staunton. She was transported to Staunton Hospital, but there she was told that her injuries were too critical for them to treat on-site, so she had to be transferred to a Trauma center.
She was then taken then to Memorial Hospital in Springfield where she was told her heel was shattered and her tibial plateau was broken.
Surgery was necessary to repair both. When her heel shattered the bone exited her skin at the ankle, and as a result, she had to have surgery the night of the accident to do debridement and clean the wound.
She was hospitalized for 5 days, and after meeting with the orthopedic doctors they told her "they have never seen such a bad break to the knee and heel."
It was going to be a challenge to reconstruct both areas, and it is a possibility that she may have to have knee replacement and ankle fusion a few years down the road.
Surgery was scheduled a week apart on the knee and foot. She was in a lot of pain after both surgeries and was not able to walk on her right leg at all. Recovery from the surgery was very painful and difficult.
Her knee surgery took place on April 26th and heel surgery followed on May 3rd. She was finally able to start moving her knee the end of June but was still not able to put any weight on her leg.
When she was finally able to start bearing weight in July she started physical therapy. Therapy was very difficult and painful for her, but she wasn't making progress the way she should have been.
X-rays have all came back fine, so therapy continued. After consulting with the doctors again they determined that something else must be going on in the knee for it to not be bending.
So on October 17th she had surgery again to have all the hardware they just put in April 26th removed so she could have a MRI to see the other damage in the knee.
While in surgery the surgeon tried to bend the knee, and he said it will not bend, something else is wrong. We have another MRI scheduled for October 31st and an appointment November 1st to have stitches removed and discuss MRI results.
We continue to pray that it will be a simple fix since she has been through so much already.
